Artist Statement
Bachelor of Fine Arts / 2017
I remember one of the most shocking moments during my career as a Graphic Designer came during my final semester of undergrad.
We were discussing residencies, and the conversation seemed to be centered around those who chose a more traditional medium; painting, sculpture, drawing and printmaking. I raised my hand to ask if there were residencies for Designers such as myself, and was immediately told "your work is commercial, there's really no place for you". I remember feeling like there was something unspoken at the end of his statement, something like - 'there's really no place for you in our world.' It is my strong belief that there is a place for digital and media artists in the world of art. Not just a single place but an important place. With technology quickly advancing during our generation's lifetime, it's important for artists to keep with the time. Whether the artwork is commercial or not - it is still artwork. Artwork that is consumed by thousands all over the world. As a designer I have a chance that other artists today don't - the chance to make a real impact on the world around me. |

BiographyKailah Ann Constance Hurst was born on March 17th, 1995 in Cortland New York. Daughter to Stephen Hurst, and Kelley Reagan. Her memories of her hometown are limited. At the age of three her father found a new job under the Department of Environmental Conservation as a fisheries biologist, and they moved from one small town to another.
She grew up in Knox, New York - a bit of countryside just half an hour away from New York's capital. From a young age she was already interested in the arts, pushing herself to make her art teachers proud with her drawings and puppets and paintings. It was when her parents invested in the first Family PC that an entirely new world of art opened up to her. Years later after yet another move, she finally got her own personal laptop. From here she quickly moved from MS paint to photoshop - and without any formal training in the program began to create. Not long after this she became interested in designing websites, and thus delved into the world of coding. It didn't take long for her to realize that she had a knack for the digital arts. After graduation Kailah enrolled into the SUNY Potsdam. She entered the Design program there where she thrived, and took part of several organizations on campus - helping them improve their publicity with her designs. At the urging of her advisor, she decided to join the Bachelor of Fine Arts Program, and graduated May 2017 with her BFA degree in hand. |
